Description:
Remote and hybrid hiring have made employment eligibility verification more complex. Employers must understand when physical document examination is required, when they may use the DHS-authorized alternative procedure, how E-Verify affects the process, and how to maintain records that withstand government inspection. Employers using the remote procedure must meet specific eligibility and documentation requirements, including participation in E-Verify in good standing. This practical course gives HR, payroll, accounting, finance, legal, and compliance professionals a structured framework for managing Form I-9 responsibilities across the employee lifecycle. Participants will review completion deadlines, acceptable document categories, retention rules, remote verification workflows, E-Verify case processing, TNC handling, reverification, and common compliance failures. The program also examines the difference between technical and substantive violations, correction and amendment procedures, internal audit methods, fraudulent-document concerns, anti-discrimination safeguards, and preparation for ICE inspections. Employers may conduct internal audits using neutral, nondiscriminatory criteria, and ICE inspection notices generally require Forms I-9 to be produced within three business days

Learning Objective
Identify employer responsibilities for completing, retaining, updating, and reverifying Form I-9.
